Police say a former Marine sergeant celebrated his 29th birthday by going on a rampage that left three law enforcement officers dead and three others wounded today in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

This morning police received a call of a "suspicious person armed with an assault riffle walking around near Airline Highway," when officers responded Gavin Long of Kansas City, began shooting.

The officers have been identified as Montrell Jackson and Matthew Gerald both worked for the Baton Rouge police department. The other person killed has been identified as Baton Rouge sheriff's deputy Brad Garafola.

Today's shooting comes less than two weeks after Alton Sterling, an African-American man was shot and killed by Baton Rouge police during a confrontation that sparked a series of protests across the city.
