Broner Denied Early Release From Jail

Boxer Adrien Broner won't be released early from a 30-day jail sentence for contempt of court.

A judge in Cincinnati on Thursday told the former WBA Super Lightweight champion that his celebrity wouldn't earn him leniency. The Hamilton County judge noted Broner was sentenced after showing up "three hours late and drunk" for his scheduled July 19 trial on felonious assault and aggravated robbery charges. Broner had said he was sick.

Broner's attorney argued Thursday that an upcoming fight and an impending civil case are reasons for early release. Attorney William Welsh didn't immediately return a call Friday seeking comment.

The felony charges against Broner arose from a lawsuit filed by a man accusing Broner of pointing a handgun at him during a dispute over gambling and knocking him unconscious.
