SIAC: Week 1 Players Of The Week

David Whipple (Miles) was named the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Offensive Player of the Week along with Osband Thompson (Tuskegee) who was picked as the Defensive Player of the Week, released on Monday.
Central State had a pair of players receive weekly accolades. Clim Robbins was tabbed Special Teams Player of the Week and De’Michael Johnson was selected as the Newcomer of the Week.
Whipple, a 6-1 senior quarterback from Gordan, Ga. helped the Golden Bears rally from a 21-0 halftime deficit by scoring three times in the second half to top Fort Valley State 34-21 in the Labor Day Golden Classic. He threw for 231 yards that included a 49-yard touchdown pass. Whipple also rushed forn31 yards and two scores.
Thompson, a 6-0 junior linebacker led all tacklers in the game with 16 total tackles, including eight solo tackles in a 36-13 win over Clark Atlanta. The Miami, Fla. native also made three tackles for loss against Clark Atlanta, while forcing a fumble and helping Tuskegee record a safety. Although he didn’t recover the fumble, he made the tackle in the end zone that gave the Golden Tigers an eight-point lead at that point.
Robbins combined for 152 yards of return yardage in a 31-19 setback to Dayton. Despite Dayton’s attempts to kick away from Robbins, he totaled three kick returns for 55 yards. His most impressive play came on an 80-yard punt return for a score in the fourth quarter. Defensively, the 5-9 senior from West Orlando, Fla. finished with a game-high three pass breakups and two solo tackles.
Jackson, a 6-0 running back from Louisville, Ky., found the end zone twice in the fourth quarter with a 1-yard run and 3-yard run. He finished with 64 yards on the ground and hauled in four receptions for 15 yards in his first game as a Marauder.
