SWAC: Week 1 Players Of The Week


BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Southern running back Lenard Tillery and defensive back Danny Johnson,, Grambling State running back Martez Carter and Alabama State linebacker Darron Johnson have been recognized by the Southwestern Athletic Conference for their outstanding performances during action from Sept. 1-4. Offensive Player of the Week Lenard Tillery Southern Running Back RB | R-Sr. | 5-10 | 200 lbs. | Baton Rouge, La. Tillery's quest to become the SWAC's all-time leading rusher got off to a great start Saturday as the red-shirt senior rushed for 161 yards on 26 carries at Louisiana-Monroe. Tillery added a 2-yard TD run, his 33rd career rushing TD. The 161-yard game also serves as Tillery's 15th career 100-yard rushing game. Defensive Player of the Week Danny Johnson Southern Defensive Back DB | Jr. | 5-10 | 194 lbs. | East Feliciana, La. Johnson posted a career-high 11 tackles, including four solo stops during Southern's 38-21 loss to Louisiana-Monroe. Johnson added two interceptions for 20 yards. Johnson registered his seventh and eighth career interceptions and it marked the East Feliciana native's second collegiate game with two picks. Special Teams Player of the Week Martez Carter Grambling State Running Back/Return Specialist RB/RS | Jr. | 5-8 | 175 lbs. | Monroe, La. During Grambling State's 72-12 rout over Virginia-Lynchburg, Carter racked up 226 all purpose yards, highlighted by a 57-yard punt return for a touchdown, and an 87-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the win. He also rushed for 78 yards on just three carries. Newcomer of the Week Darron Johnson Alabama State Linebacker LB | Fr. | 6-1 | 225 lbs. | Memphis, Tenn. Johnson made an impact in his collegiate debut for the Hornets during their season-opener versus Texas-San Antonio, posting eight tackles (seven solo). In addition, he notched his first sack of his Alabama State career and a tackle for loss while forcing a fumble during the contest.
