ATLANTA (October 10, 2016) – Kevin Lacey (Tuskegee) was named the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Offensive Player of the Week and David Smith (Morehouse) was selected as the Defensive Player of the Week, announced Monday by the league office.
Raul Martinez (Lane) received the Special Teams Player of the Week honor and Austin Stephens (Miles) was tabbed Newcomer of the Week.
Lacey, a 6’6 senior quarterback from Wetumpka, Ala., accounted for 300 of Tuskegee’s 335 yards of total offense, throwing for 300 yards in a 28-19 victory over Morehouse. The senior connected on touchdown passes of 16 yards, 60, 50 and eight yards in the victory. He also completed 62.1 percent of his passes in the win and was named the Offensive Most Valuable Player for the 81st annual Tuskegee-Morehouse Classic.
Smith recorded a career-high and team season-high 15 tackles against the league’s top offense in a 28-19 setback to Tuskegee. Smith, a 6’1 sophomore linebacker from Newport News, Va., recovered a 28-yard fumble for a touchdown in the third quarter and was named the Morehouse Most Valuable Player of the Tuskegee-Morehouse Classic.
Martinez, a 6’3 freshman kicker from Atlanta, Ga., was responsible for 13 of 19 points for Lane in a 19-18 homecoming win over Benedict. He put the Dragons back ahead with the go-ahead field goal from 35 yards late in the fourth quarter to wrap the victory up for the Dragons. Martinez added five kickoffs for 296 yards and one touchback.
In a 36-0 win over Central State, Stephens had a game-high 11 tackles (eight solo), two tackles for loss, and his first career interception, which he returned 40 yards. Stephens is a 5’11 freshman linebacker from Munford, Ala.
