SIAC Week 8 Football Honors


ATLANTA (October 24, 2016) – George Myers Jr. (Benedict) was selected as the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Offensive Player of the Week and Rodriquez Jones (Kentucky State) was named the Defensive Player of the Week, announced Monday by the league office.

Rickym Holmes (Benedict) was chosen as the Special Teams Player of the Week and Whitney Richardson (Lane) earned the Newcomer of the Week honor.

Myers, a 5’6 senior running back from Hephzibah, Ga., led Benedict with 168 rushing yards to lift the Tigers to a 13-10 win against Morehouse. The Maroon Tigers entered Saturday’s game leading the SIAC in rushing defense, giving up an average of 76.3 yards per game. The 168 yards by Myers were the most by any player against Morehouse this season.

Jones blocked No. 5 Tuskegee’s 18-yard field goal attempt with 18 seconds remaining in the contest to seal a 10-9 victory and claim the 2016 SIAC West Division title. Jones, a 6’2 junior defensive end, recorded five tackles, 1.5 sacks, and a fumble recovery in the win.

Holmes blocked a potential game-tying 21-yard field goal attempt by Morehouse’s Alexis Gonzalez with 38 seconds left in the game, allowing Benedict to hang on to a homecoming victory over Morehouse. Holmes, a 6’5 junior defensive end hails from Baltimore, Md.

Richardson recorded nine total tackles in a 26-14 loss to Miles College. He added three sacks to his conference leading total (16.5). Richardson a 6’5 junior defensive end from Perkinston, Miss., recorded a sack that led to a fumble and a defensive touchdown for the Dragons in the third quarter.
