SWAC Week 8 Football Honors


BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Grambling State quarterback Devante Kincade and defensive back Joseph McWilliams, Jackson State linebacker Javancy Jones, and Prairie View A&M quarterback Jalen Morton have been recognized by the Southwestern Athletic Conference for their outstanding performances during week nine of the 2016 season. Offensive Player of the Week Devante Kincade Grambling State Quarterback QB | Jr. | 6-1 | 190 | Dallas, Texas Kincade did it through the air and on the ground, accounting for nearly 400 total yards of offense in Grambling's 59-10 victory over Mississippi Valley State. Kincade passed for 326 yards and four scores -- with each scoring toss coming in the first half -- and also rushed 9 times for 70 yards. He was 20-of-27 passing during the game. Defensive Player of the Week Javancy Jones Jackson State Linebacker LB | Sr. | 6-2 | 245 lbs. | Macon, Miss.

Jones led a stingy defensive effort for Jackson State, who limited Texas Southern in a 21-13 victory. The senior posted eight total stops, with three coming behind the line of scrimmage. He also took down the quarterback twice in the contest. Jones, the conference leader in tackles for loss last season, is currently third in the league in the category with 11.5. Special Teams Player of the Week Joseph McWilliams Grambling State Defensive Back DB | Jr. | 5-11 | 185 lbs. | Baton Rouge, La. McWilliams was a difference maker on special teams for the Tigers in their 59-10 defeat of Mississippi Valley, as the junior got home twice to swat two punts. McWilliams' first swat led directly to Grambling's first score of the game, and on his second block, the Baton Rouge native pounced on the ball himself to add another touchdown to aid Grambling's efforts. Newcomer of the Week Jalen Morton Prairie View A&M Quarterback QB | Fr. | 6-3 | 240 lbs. | Arlington, Texas In a 65-44 shootout loss to FBS opponent Rice, Mortonposted a career-high 325 total yards of offense (career-high 278 passing, 47 rushing) and three total touchdowns versus the Owls. Morton completed 18 of 29 passes with a pair of touchdowns -- coming from 62 yards and 47 yards out, respectively -- and rushed for a career-long 39-yard touchdown run.
