MEAC Week 10 Football Honors
NORFOLK, Va. - Savannah State quarterback TJ Bell was selected as the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Offensive Player of the Week, the conference announced today. North Carolina Central linebacker Reggie Hunter was named Defensive Player of the Week.
North Carolina A&T State’s Elijah Bell earned Rookie of the Week honors, while North Carolina Central’s Carl Jones received Offensive Lineman of the Week honors. Mike Jones, of North Carolina Central, was selected as the Specialist of the Week.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
TJ Bell Savannah State QB 6-3, 180, Fr. Louisville, Ga. Bell scored all four of the Tigers’ touchdowns in their 31-14 win over Norfolk State. He completed 15-of-28 passes (53.6 percent) for 159 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions. The Louisville, Ga. native also rushed for a game-high 149 yards and one touchdown.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Reggie Hunter North Carolina Central LB 6-0, 225, R-Jr. Henderson, N.C. Hunter recorded a game-high seven tackles (five solo), including one tackle for a loss, in the 38-19 win at Delaware State. He intercepted a pass before halftime and returned it for a 19-yard touchdown. That was Hunter’s first collegiate pick-six.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Elijah Bell North Carolina A&T State WR 6-2, 210, Fr. Charleston, W.Va. Bell caught three passes for 47 yards and two touchdowns in the 30-20 win over South Carolina State. His second touchdown was a nine-yard catch in the fourth quarter that gave the Aggies a 23-20 lead over the Bulldogs.
OFFENSIVE LINEMAN OF THE WEEK
Carl Jones North Carolina Central C 6-2, 285, R-Sr. Nashville, Tenn. Jones earned a 94-percent grade on his blocking assignments, with seven pancake blocks, no penalties and no sacks allowed, as NCCU finished with 469 yards of total offense. He also helped in pass protection, as the Eagles completed 18-of-32 passes, with two touchdowns, in the win over Delaware State.
SPECIALIST OF THE WEEK Mike Jones North Carolina Central PR 5-10, 190, R-Jr. Baltimore, Md. Jones returned a 90-yard punt for a touchdown in the win at Delaware State. His return was the second-longest punt return in NCCU history.
