Ex-UN Chief Kofi Annan Dies

Former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan is dead at the age of 80.

Annan led the United Nations from 1997 to 2006 and was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2001 for his work with the UN. The current Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, said Annan led the United Nations into the new millennium with matchless dignity and determination.

The Kofi Annan Foundation says he died of a short illness early this morning at a hospital in Switzerland with his wife and children around him.
