2nd Annual BBQing While Black Event Successful

The Oakland community continues to come together more than a year after a racially-charged incident at Lake Merritt prompted the creation of a new family-friendly event.

The second annual "BBQing While Black" event was held Sunday at the lake and organizers are calling it a success. It is the brainchild of Onsayo Abram, who was one of two men who got into a verbal altercation with a woman who called the police on them for reportedly illegally barbecuing in the park last year. Abram tells ABC-7 he wants to make a positive out of a negative and city officials are with him.

Charcoal grills had not been allowed in that portion of the park at the time of the altercation with the woman known as "BBQ Becky," but the city has since put in hot ash disposal units.
