Wingate 42, Johnson C. Smith 6 FINAL Johnson C. Smith University opened the 2019 season hosting nationally ranked Wingate University at the Irwin Belk Complex on Thursday night. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 21-0 first half lead over Smith and never trailed as they took a 42-6, win. The Golden Bulls got on the board late in the fourth quarter with an impressive 90-yard run by Damon Rice. David Francis led the JCSU with nine tackles, including a tackle for loss. Next Opponent: at Benedict, September 14th at 6:00 PM Lock Haven 57, Lincoln (PA) 13 FINAL The Lincoln University football team kicked off their 2019 season with a game at Lock Haven University Thursday night, falling to the Bald Eagles 57-13. The Lions were led offensively by Eban Jackson with 159 yards passing and two touchdowns (one passing, one rushing), including a 44-yard pass to Dah'mear Triplett (three catches for 61 yards) for a score. Keenan Reid led the way defensively with 12 tackles, including eight solo, while Tayonte McKenzie totaled 222 return yards on seven returns. Next Opponent: at Delaware State (DI FCS), September 14th at 1:00 PM UVA-Wise 40, Chowan 22 FINAL The Chowan football team started off slow against UVA-Wise in their season opener and could not keep pace as the Hawks dropped a 40-22 decision on the road on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks rushed for 233 yards on the ground led by Imeek Watkins with 64 yards, including a 58-yard run. Tyrell Freeman and Deshaun Wethington each had 62 yards each. Connor O’Brien had a team-high 12 tackles. Next Opponent: vs. Alderson Broaddus, September 14th at 1:00 PM Bowie State 34, American International College 20 FINAL The defending CIAA Champions of Bowie State University opened the 2019 season on the road at American International College on Saturday afternoon and used a huge fourth quarter surge to claim a 34-20 victory. Quarterback Ja’Rome Johnson entered the game late in the second quarter and rushed for a team-high 172 yards. The Bulldog defense surrendered just 144 total yards as Anthony Edwards led the way with eight tackles. Next Opponent: at Shaw, September 14th at 1:00 PM Lenoir-Rhyne 68, Saint Augustine's 7 FINAL Saint Augustine's University (SAU) opened the 2019 football season with a 68-7 loss to nationally-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne University at Moretz Stadium on Saturday. The Falcons only score came on a 23-yard pass from Jalen Jones to Kyle Levere. Joseph Harris and Ricky Horton each tallied seven tackles Next Opponent: at Mars Hill, September 14th at 1:00 PM Campbell 38, Shaw 14 FINAL The Shaw University football team fell 38-14 to Division I, Campbell University in its season opener Saturday night at the Barker-Lane Stadium. Senior quarterback Torrin Campbell connected 11-of-23 pass completions for 173 yards and a touchdown while junior defensive back Jaleel Scroggins registered 10 total tackles for the Bears who fall to 0-1 on the young season. Next Opponent: vs. Bowie State, September 14th at 1:00 PM Virginia Union 36, Hampton 17 FINAL Khalid Morris threw four touchdown passes, including three to Charles Hall, and Virginia Union scored 22 unanswered second-half points to upset Division I FCS Hampton, 36-17, on Saturday. The Panthers also got 159 yards rushing from preseason All-CIAA pick Tabyus Taylor, who also had a receiving touchdown. Taj Conway led the way defensively with 10 total tackles. Next Opponent: vs Lenoir-Rhyne, September 14th at 1:00 PM Norfolk State 44, Virginia State 21 FINAL Virginia State got a pair of fourth quarter touchdown passes from Jordan Davis but suffered a 44-21 loss to Norfolk State in the Battle of the States on Saturday to open the season. The Trojans outgained the Spartans, 502-430, and produced 205 yards on the ground, including 77 yards and a score from Cordelral Cook. K’Jon Coley had a game-high nine tackles and Javon Frazier totaled a pair of tackles for loss. Next Opponent: vs. UNC Pembroke, September 14th at 6:00 PM UNC-Pembroke 27, Winston-Salem State 21 FINAL Winston-Salem State relinquished a eight-point fourth quarter lead in a 27-21 loss to UNC-Pembroke in the season opener for both teams. WSSU gave up 14 unanswered points late in the game that proved detrimental in their effort to avenge last season's loss to the Braves. Rams running back Farrell Murchinson ran for 109 and quarterback Dominique Graves threw for 180 yards with three touchdowns but also threw two costly picks, including one on the team's final drive. Ta'Shaun led the WSSU defense with six tackles and a tackle for loss. Next Opponent: vs. Catawba, September 14th at 6:00 PM Livingstone 24, Clark-Atlanta 13 FINAL Livingstone overcame an early deficit to defeat Clark-Atlanta, 24-13, on the road Saturday, winning their first season opener since 2015. After being down 13-0 early in the second quarter, the Blue Bears ran off 24 unanswered points that included three touchdown passes from Miles Davis. James Douglas led a Livingstone defense that pitched a shutout over the game’s final 44 minutes with eight tackles, including 2.5 tackles for loss, and two sacks. Next Opponent: vs. Elizabeth City State, September 14th at 4:00 PM Fayetteville State 35, Benedict 21 FINAL Fayetteville State football started its season on the right note with an impressive 35-21 victory over Benedict College. The Broncos carried a 26-0 lead into halftime and relied on a defense, led by 11 tackles from Nigel Peele, which produced two touchdowns and two safeties while giving up just 74 yards of total offense to hold off a late rally from the Tigers. Collyn Anderson threw for 154 yards and a pair of touchdowns and Stevie Green contributed for 70 yards on the ground.
