CIAA Football Recap Week 3
#25 Bowie State 42, Alderson Broaddus 14 FINAL Nationally ranked Bowie State (#25 in AFCA Poll) continued their winning ways to open the 2019 season with a convincing 42-14 win over Alderson Broaddus in their home opener. The Bulldogs jumped out early on the Battlers with a 21-0 lead thanks to the play of quarterback Gaston Cooper, who threw a pair of touchdowns (33 and 27 yards) and ran for another score in the first half. ABU opened the second half with touchdown drive but the defending CIAA Champions responded with 21 unanswered points, including a 42-yard interception return by Tevin Singleton for a score, to put the game away. Cooper finished the day completing 8 of 14 passes for 187 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for 29 yards and another score. Anthony Howard led a BSU defense that gave up just 14 points with six tackles while Josh Pryor had a team-high 2.5 tackles for loss and a sack. Next Opponent: vs. Saint Augustine’s, Sept. 28 at 3:00 PM Winston-Salem State 23, Tuskegee 20 FINAL After losing fourth quarter leads in consecutive weeks, Winston-Salem State held off a late surge to secure their first win of the season, 23-20, on the road against Tuskegee. Up 23-13 in the fourth, the Rams looked to be headed to a similar fate after a Golden Tigers touchdown cut their lead to three. However, WSSU found a way to close out the game thanks to defensive stand on TU’s final offensive possession, aided by a pair of sacks from Ta’Shaun Taylor, followed by running back Farrell Murchinson’s three carries for 18 yards on the final drive of the game to help run out the clock. Murchinson finished with 42 yards on the ground and a score while quarterback Dominique Graves threw for 176 yards and scored two touchdowns (one passing, one rushing). Taylor anchored the Rams defense with a team-high two tackles for loss on two sacks, a forced fumble, and an interception to go along with five tackles. Next Opponent: at Virginia Union, Sept. 28 at 1:00 PM Virginia State 34, Saint Augustine's 7 FINAL In a non-conference matchup featuring conference foes, Virginia State took down St. Augustine’s on the road, 34-7, to secure their second straight win of the season. The Trojans scored the game’s only points of the first half which included a 5-yard touchdown run by Jevon Pierre and a 15-yarder for a score by Demetrius Strickland, who ran for 51 yards on nine carries in the first half, to take a 14-0 lead into halftime. A 1-yard run by Jeremiah Miller, midway through the third quarter, to complete an 11-play, 70 yard drive would give SAU their only points on the day and make the score 17-7. VSU responded with 17 unanswered points that included an 8-yard touchdown pass from Cordelral Cook to Marquez Phillips and another score from Strickland, this time from eight yards out. In addition to his two scores, Strickland ran for 114 of Virginia State’s 235 rushing yards. Linebacker Joseph Harris had a game-high 12 tackles for the Falcons. Smith 19 FINAL In another non-conference battle between CIAA teams, Virginia Union defeated visiting Johnson C. Smith, 33-19, in the Willard Bailey Classic at Hovey Field in Richmond, VA. A pair of Emanuel Wilson touchdown runs and a Cristian Benitez field goal helped JCSU go into halftime up 16-14, a lead they would take all the way into the fourth quarter. Another Benitez field goal made the score 19-14 with 12:10 to play but a 76-yard kickoff return by Jaiden Reavis would help set up an 11-yard touchdown pass from Khalid Morris to Charles Hall, who also hooked up with Morris on a 74-yard score earlier in the game, to give VUU a 20-19 lead. Down 26-19 after back-to-back Jefferson Souza field goals, the Golden Bulls got the ball with 1:38 left and a chance to tie the game but a 40-yard pick six from Panthers safety Sterling Hammond ended any hopes of a comeback. Hammond had a huge game for the VUU defense with 16 tackles (10 solo), a forced fumble, and a blocked kick along with the interception while Hall had 114 yards on four catches, his third straight game with over 100+ receiving yards, with Morris throwing for 267 yards on 14 completions. Wilson had another big game for the Golden Bulls with 152 rushing yards and two scores. Next Opponent: Virginia Union vs. Winston-Salem State, Sept. 28 at 1:00 PM; John C. Smith at Virginia State, Sept 28 at 6:00 PM Livingstone 21, Allen 7 FINAL Miles Hayes threw for 173 yards and two touchdowns while Andrew Faraimo ran for 89 yards and a score as the Blue Bears defeated Allen, 21-7, to remain unbeaten on the season. Ziah Gibson led the Livingstone defense with 2.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sack along with four tackles. Next Opponent: at Lincoln (PA), Sept. 21 at 1:00 PM NC Central 45, Elizabeth City State 7 FINAL North Carolina Central jumped out to an early 17-0 lead to help the Eagles defeat Elizabeth City State, 45-7. The Vikings only score came on an 11-yard touchdown pass from Kedrick Patterson to Dajuan Greene midway through the second quarter to make it 17-7. NCCU would close the game with 28 unanswered points. Juanya’ Majette led ECSU with eight tackles. Next Opponent: vs. Fayetteville State, Sept. 28 at 4:00 PM Shaw 48, Chowan 47 FINAL (2OT) In maybe Division II’s most exciting game of the weekend and featuring a national spotlight for the first conference game of the season, Shaw delivered a game-winning stop on a two-point conversion to secure a 48-47 victory over Chowan in double overtime during the NCAA Division II Football Showcaset. The game would be a tale of two halves as the Bears controlled the first half and took a 27-0 lead, highlighted by a pair of Torrin Campbell touchdown passes, into the half but Chowan wouldn’t go away quietly. In the second half, the Hawks would score 41 points over the game’s next 23 minutes, including a trio of touchdown passes from Bryce Whitt, to make the score 41-33 with 6:49 to play. After an interception on their next possession, Shaw got a short field on a partially blocked punt and capitalized with a 7-yard touchdown pass to Kevonta Moses from Campbell, who followed up with a successful run on the 2-point conversion, to tie the game at 41 and force overtime. Both teams failed to score on their first possessions of overtime but on the first play of the second overtime period Campbell hit Daniel Bender for a 25-yard score to go up 48-41. Chowan would answer when Witt found Brian Hopper for a 13-yard touchdown pass but failed on the two-point attempt, giving Shaw the win and an early lead in the CIAA standings. Campbell threw for 316 yards and Witt threw for 201 with both quarterbacks tossing four touchdowns apiece. Sidney Gibbs ran for 82 yards and two scores for Shaw while Deshaun Wethington 106 yards on 15 carries and a touchdown. Hawks defender Connor O’Brien had a game-high 15 tackles while CU’s Josh Berry and SU’s Kevin Sherman each had a pair of interceptions on defense. Next Opponent: Shaw vs. Edward Waters, Sept. 28 at 1:00 PM; Chowan at McKendree, Sept. 28 at 2:00 PM Fayetteville State 51, Lincoln (PA) 6 FINAL In the final non-conference game of week three, Fayetteville State defeated Lincoln (PA) 51-6 on Saturday night. The Broncos delivered a dominant performance on both sides of the ball as they put up 51 points with 514 yards of offense, including 276 rushing yards. The Lions were held scoreless until the final 1:16 of the contest when Emmitt Hunt found Ricard Patterson on a 60-yard touchdown pass. FSU got 206 yards passing with three touchdowns from Richard Latimer and running back Stevie Green rushed for 128 yards and a score while five different receivers caught touchdown passes. Vaughn Diggs and Devon Cathcart each had seven solo tackles for Lincoln while Gerald Simpson also had seven stops for the Broncos.
